What Is IT (Information Technology)?
IT (information technology) is the use of computers, networks, software and systems to create, store, process, secure and share digital information for a business or organisation.
Information technology — usually shortened to “IT” — covers all the hardware, software, networks and services a business uses to work with data and information. That includes computers and servers, the internet and internal networks, applications and websites, databases, cloud services and the people who keep them running.
In everyday business terms, IT is what powers your email, your website, your accounting software, your customer records and your day-to-day operations. Good IT keeps these systems fast, secure, reliable and working together.
Common examples of IT include: business computers and laptops; servers and cloud hosting; networks and Wi-Fi; websites and web applications; email and collaboration tools; databases and CRMs; cybersecurity and backups; and the support that maintains all of it.
